Why #MermaidThighs are trending on Instagram

“Thigh gap” is such an antiquated term at this point, with the rise of body positivity (and celebs like Lena Dunham and Amy Schumer to Victoria’s Secret models speaking out about it)—plus the evolving idea of what a “yoga body” looks like, and curvier models starring in Nike ads.

Which is why it’s no surprise that we’re seeing a particular Instagram trend: #MermaidThighs, which blows the age-old thigh gap trend out of the water (ahem).

Its message? “If your thighs touch, you’re one step closer to being a mermaid.” AKA the real winner.

Women are using the hashtag to share their proud photos of the thighs that get them through barre class, long runs, and more—they quite literally take you everywhere, so why would you want to diminish their power?

Keep scrolling to see the Ariel-loving women taking part in the movement. Prepare to be inspired.

Did you know mermaid tails are also a buzzy new piece of workout equipment? Yep, seriously. But if you don’t happen to have one handy, try this ballerina-approved pool workout instead.
